Sudan National Peacebuilding Programme

David_Hume_Dinka_MenSudan National Peacebuilding Programme: 2004 - 2008

Responding to Sudanese requests, Concordis International facilitated a process of informal inclusive dialogue (“track 2 diplomacy”) between senior Sudanese, designed to build cooperative relationships and to assist participants in developing constructive policy options to overcome long-term underlying socio-economic, environmental, security and other causes of conflict.

The process operated in parallel to the formal Naivasha talks and provided a link between negotiating parties, mediators and the wider Sudanese society (including political parties, tribal groups, women’s organisations and religious leaders).

Since the signature of the CPA, Concordis has continued to develop understanding, trust, consensus and cooperation between parties in a “post-conflict” environment. Subjects of consultations have included constitutional arrangements to enhance cooperation between levels of government, the role of investment in consolidating peace, access to education and post-conflict justice and reconciliation. Summaries of these consulations can be read here.

The Sudan Peacebuilding Initiative, funded by the European Commission, directly followed on from this project.
